Our previously adopted Ferrets.
A warm thank you to all our Adopters!

January 2009
Courtney
and her brother came to FVF after a landlord refused to consider ferrets as "caged pets" allowed under a lease.  When Courtney's biting behavior made it difficult to get her a home, the decision was made to allow her brother to be adopted with other ferrets.  Courtney remains available and her behavior has improved tremendously-we can't remember the last time she even tried to bite.  She is a beautiful ferret with a plush coat and wonderful markings.  She is very active and playful and gets along with other ferrets.  Because of her prior biting, she is not appropriate for first time ferret owners.  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was likely born Spring or Summer of 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/21/08 (AMC).

Polly, MaryAnn and Ginger came in via a woman who said she is an "exotics rescue" in Northern Wisconsin.  She claimed she was already housing 5 ferrets and had "no more room".  Information on these ferrets was very limited, but according to what we did get, these ferrets have never been apart and seemed to be very handleable.  Here at FVF, we have found that MaryAnn does some nipping at hands and feet and seems more comfortable with women than with men.  She will sometimes bite.  They seem to be active and playful although Polly is definitely an older ferret.  These ferrets are not recommended for first time owners.   According to the information we received, Ginger was born 7/1/06, MaryAnn was born 6/9/06 and Polly was born 10/4/03.  The condition of their teeth seem to support these dates.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 10/2/08 (AMC).

Meeko and his brother were originally surrendered to FVF in 2006 when his brother became ill.  His brother went to the bridge on 3/2/06 and Meeko was adopted.  Meeko was brought back to FVF along with an older, and much younger, ferret in July 2008 when their owner decided to go back to school and could not find an apartment which would allow all her pets.  Meeko is still pretty active and should not be considered as an only ferret-he would do best with a ferret near his age.  He has lived with a small dog, and enjoyed playing with it.  He also lived with a cat, but does not like cats and will attack them.  Meeko was reportedly born Feb 2004.  His vet check was done on 8/8/08 (AMC).  His former owner had him up to date on his distemper, which is good until 3/28/09.  Meeko had a cyst removed from the top of his head on 12/18/08.  He is doing great and would love to have a forever home to go to.

Daisy was surrendered to FVF after the other ferrets in the household went to the bridge due to old age.  According to her owners, she became "very sad" once she was alone.  They were offered the option of adopting an age appropriate friend for her, but opted to surrender her instead.  Daisy seems to be very sweet and laid back.  According to owner report and the condition of her teeth, she probably was born summer of 2003.  A broken canine was removed on 8/13/08 (NH).  She would love a quiet home with another ferret her age and activity level.  She is a "lap ferret" who enjoys being carried around and cuddled.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/8/08 (AMC).

Rita arrived with two younger ferrets (since adopted) when their owner could no longer keep up with all of her pets and had to get the number down.  Rita has a wonderful temperament and gives kisses freely.  She gets along with the other ferrets and would be very happy in a home with other ferrets she could play, snuggle up and sleep with.  Rita and her sisters all had bad coats, but because Rita's was by far the worst she was being monitored for adrenal disease.  After two months, her coat has come in very full and plush, her body condition improved, and she never developed any other signs.  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was probably born late summer or early fall of 2003.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 9/11/08 (AMC).

Otis arrived with his sister Sassy (currently classified as an unadoptable biter, but improving every day) when their owner "no longer had time" for them.  Otis is VERY energetic.  He chuckles and talks and tackles your leg before running off and grabbing toys.  He does not bite hands or arms, but does have a horrible sock fetish, which causes him to latch on to socks and the feet in them.  Because Otis has always been with other ferrets, he must go to a home with at least one other young, active ferret.  He is learning what a litter pan is for, but still likes to dig in them and use them for toy storage.   Based on owner report and the condition of his teeth, Otis was likely born Sept or Oct of 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 12/23/08 (AMC).

February
Junior, Bear
and Lucy arrived as a result of the June flooding in southern and central Wisconsin.  Junior and Bear arrived with no physical issues although Junior developed some sort of infection which required several weeks of treatment by two different antibiotics.  He is now eating and regaining the weight he lost.  He is a very sweet boy.  Bear had apparently been traumatized and did some biting when she arrived.  This has gotten better, but she will still nip, especially if you wake her up or she is stressed.  This makes her most appropriate for an experienced ferret owner.  Lucy is a sweetheart who arrived with a large fluid filled cyst on her upper tail.  The tail was amputated on 6/28/08 (LS).  Once her tail healed, she went in for adrenal surgery on 7/24/08 (LS).  Unfortunately it was her right adrenal gland which was affected.  Because of the placement on the vena cava it was not possible to remove the tumor.  She is doing well on ferretonin implants but will require one every four months-which makes her a special needs ferret.   Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe Junior and Bear were born summer of 2004, and Lucy summer of 2003.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/24/08 (AMC).  Potential adopter identified

Sassy Girl has a lot to say about everything.  She is very active and high energy-which means she sometimes gets over excited when she plays.  The person who originally brought her to FVF did not feel he was able to care for her after she was abandoned by her owner.  He did not know much about her, but did know she had not nipped since she was a kit, she had not been with kids or other animals, and she was born mid 2005.  She was adopted as an only ferret and did very well until her new family made some changes in their lifestyle.  After the family moved and children started coming into the home, Sassy Girl reportedly started targeting the male adult in the house.  She was returned to FVF and in less than an hour was she was giving kisses and doing great.  She has moved back into the ferret room and is doing fine.  She would be happiest in a home without children and needs at least one other high energy ferret to play with.  Vet check and distemper done on 12/21/07 (NH).

Harriman arrive with his brother NipNap (adopted with another senior) and sister Pookie (went to the bridge) following the death of their owner.  Harriman (aka Harry) is a big silver boy with black spots.  The person bringing him to FVF reported that eating is his favorite activity.  He reportedly will nip at your toes for attention and nip at your hand when he was had enough.  He likes going outside on his leash and likes playing in the snow.  We have noticed that since moving into the main room at the shelter, Harry has made attempts to dominate other ferrets.  He would do best in a home with other ferrets who are either large enough to deal with the his attempts, or who are more passive and not interested in being dominant.  Based on the condition of his teeth, he was likely born summer of 2005.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 7/11/08 (AMC).

Kodiak and Pudge arrived as victims of the economy.  They are big, happy boys that love to play with each other and any other ferrets they can get bouncing.  Pudge is very gentle with people and likes cats.  He is pretty good with the litter pan.  Kodiak and Pudge like to play under blankets and play chase games. Kodiak does have the bad habit of biting arms and hands.  We believe it is a misguided attempt to get people to play-it does not seem mean or aggressive, more excited.  We are using gentle correction to limit the behavior and he will need an experienced owner willing to continue this approach.  According to the person surrendering him, he never bit her teenage daughter and will take treats from your fingers very gently.  Kodiak has also been around cats, but tends to get a little too rough in his play for them.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe Pudge was probably born Dec 2006 to March 2007, and Kodiak was likely born March to June 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 12/11/08 (AMC).  Kodiak is scheduled to have his teeth cleaned on 1/7/08 (NH).  .

Beavis and Snow are more victims of the economy.  They are large, playful boys who quickly adapted to the shelter and seem to enjoy the other ferrets.  Both are good ferrets with no history of nipping or biting (aside from the occasional excited play nip).  Beavis has started giving occasional kisses, and kissed his former owner as he was being surrendered.  They seem to be decent about using the litter pan when caged, as long as the pan is kept clean.  Since they were moved into the main ferret room we have seen Snow using the litterbox, it was harder to tell with Beavis since he was one of five large DEWs, now that several of them have been adopted, it should be easier to determine how well Beavis is doing with it.  Based on the condition of their teeth we believe Beavis was born around June of 2006 and Snow around June 2007.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 1/19/09 (NH).

Placed in a Permanent Foster Home
Jillian
is a wonderfully lovey kissy senior girl.  She arrived from the Madison area with another ferret (unadoptabledue to age and  health issues) as victims of the economy.  Although she is over six years old, she is in good health except for some rear hip stiffness when she first gets up.  She has been with other ferrets, but is not really interested in them.  We have not seen her sleeping or playing with the other seniors, not even the ferret she came in with.  She is extremely people focused and would love having someone to play with her, let her explore, and then cuddle her when she tires out.  She has lived with a dog, but would likely be just as happy getting ALL of her person's attention.  She has also been with very young children and is fine with them as long as they are gentle.  Owner report and the condition of her teeth indicate she was born late 2002 or early 2003.  Vet check and distemper done on 2/3/09 (AMC).

March
Slinky
adopted by one of our regular volunteers after two of her ferrets went to the bridge in a very short time, leaving her third ferret needing a healthy, active playmate.  They feel for him before he was ever listed for adoption-as a result, no biography was written.

Dart and Princess Magpie arrived with their brother Moose after their owners divorced and neither could keep the ferrets.  Dart is a very active ferret who likes to climb his cage.  He lives up to his name.  He will occasionally pick on Magpie-like an annoying little brother.  Magpie is a sweet heart who will allow herself to be held for a little while before she has to be out and active.  Both like ferretone.  Neither has a history of biting or hard nipping.  Both like to grab socks, but not bad.  They like blankets or towels on the lower level of their cage.  They are good about the litter pan in the cage but will need some reminders outside of it.  Based on owner report and the condition of their teeth, we are estimating they were born late winter or early spring of 2005.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 3/12/09.

Heather arrived with her two sisters (Flower and Stella-listed as a pair) via Green Lake Area Animal Shelter.  One of our volunteers gave them names since we were not provided with any information beyond the fact they had been seized.  These girls originally did not trust people and were very skinny with bad coats.  They have been at FVF for some time and have made nice progress.  Their coats look better and they have put on some weight.  Heather has always been very sweet.  Because her sisters had more issues than she did, the decision was made to offer her to a home with another playful, active ferret.  According to the condition of her teeth, we estimate she was born in Sept or Oct of 2005.  Vet check and distemper done on 10/2/08 (AMC).

Kira arrived with her sister Julz (currently unadoptable due to biting) from a home in the Twin Cities.  According to owner report, Kira is very sweet and loving.  She loves both ferret and human interaction.  She gets along well with cats, but has never been around dogs.  Because she has always lived with other ferrets, she should not be considered as a single ferret.  According to information received, and the condition of her teeth, she was likely born summer of 2005.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 10/2/08 (AMC).

April
Squirt
is a very sweet girl who didn't get along with other ferrets at first, although she has started showing interest-especially in older or more mellow ferrets.  She was surrendered because of "lifestyle changes" that resulted in Squirt not getting enough attention.  Squirt is a very people focused ferret, although she really doesn't want to be held.  She runs and wants to be chased.  She is very busy and talkative.  She gets along with dogs and cats.  She likes cat treats but so far the only ferret treat she has like was a foamy fry.  Her favorite toy is a feather on a stick cat toy.  She hasn't shown any tendency to nip or bite.  According to records provided with her, she was born March of 2005.  Her former owner has her up to date on Rabies and Distemper until August of 2009.  She had her wellness check on 3/12/09 (AMC).

May
Flower and Stella
arrived with their sister Heather (adopted separately) via Green Lake Area Animal Shelter.  One of our volunteers gave them names since we were not provided with any information beyond the fact they had been seized.  These girls originally did not trust people and were very skinny with bad coats.  They have been at FVF for some time and have made nice progress.  Their coats look better and they have put on some weight.  They have transitioned into the ferret room and get along well with all the other ferrets.  Flower and Stella had shown some nipping behavior when they first arrived.  Stella is much better and now asks for attention.  She is obsessed with socks and will try to take them off your feet, which sometimes accidentally results in bit toes or feet.  Flower will has not bitten or nipped in a long time and gives kisses now.  Given their histories, these girls are not recommended for first time owners or homes with young children According to the condition of their teeth, we estimate they were both born in Sept or Oct of 2005.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 10/2/08 (AMC).

Sable (white toes and bib) and Menard (silver) arrived when their family no longer had time for them.  Sable is hyperactive, and that says something when applied to a ferret!  He hits the ground running and wants to keep going til the last second.  He is a bad gardener and has been working on digging up a rubber tree here at the shelter.  He loves to be played with and play chase.  He does play bite and will go up your pants leg and give you a little nip in the back of the leg.  He isn't interested in being held.  Sable was likely born at the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007.  Menard is a very sweet, mellow older ferret.  He loves attention and is very happy to be held and cuddled.  He arrived with what appeared to be enlarged lymph nodes but our vet believes it is "just fat".  He also has a fatty cyst on his back which does not need to be removed at this time.  Menard was likely born mid 2004.  Although Sable and Menard are very different ages and energy levels, they obviously love each other and it would be nice if they could go to a home together with a younger ferret to play with Sable, and someone to give Menard lots of love and cuddles.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 4/8/09 (LS).

Bean and Brady arrived with two other ferrets (Pixie and Snowball) because of a worsening disability (among other things) on the part of their owner.  According to reports, all are playful, have been with cats, and are willing to be held (especially Brady).  Here at FVF we have seen they are all active.  They are not great about the litter pan, even in the cage-they used the one on the bottom level, but tended to potty on the shelf toward the top of the cage, next to the pan.  They seem to prefer a water dish to a water bottle.  When they arrived at FVF they needed immediate baths due to life with heavy smokers.  Their coats are still coarse-they have improved with time and good nutrition (they had been fed cat food).  All but Bean had mats of various severity-they did not give us any trouble when we rubbed them with ferret conditioner and combed them out-many ferrets would have struggled and/or bitten during such a procedure.  Based on the condition of their teeth Brady was born early in 2007, and Bean late summer of 2008.  Vet check and distemper shots done 4/23/09 (AMC).

Miss Farrah and Mr. Squiggly arrived as the result of a move.  They had been very well cared for and you can tell they are used to getting attention.  They would make great "first ferrets".  According to their former family Farrah gives kisses.  They also told us that when Squiggly was younger he would nip noses and ears.  It is uncertain if he would still do this-they "addressed" the problem by simply not putting him by their ears or noses.  Here at FVF they have been playful, active ferret with no real issues.  They are good about the litter pan in their cage, but not so reliable outside of the cage.  One of them (we think it is Farrah) likes to dig the food out of the dish-we have run into this so often we simply put the dishes into small litter pans reserved for this purpose.  Both ferrets have been around very little children and dogs.  Farrah was born 3/21/05, Squiggly 2/27/05.  Vet check and distemper done on 4/23/09 (AMC).

Slick and Christine are a nice pair that would be great for a first time ferret owner. They had been adopted late in 2008, but returned to the shelter in April 2009 (along with Jasper and Pumpkin) because of a divorce.  They were originally surrendered because their owner went into the military. According to their original owner, Slick loves baths and belly rubs. He has shown himself to be very playful and gets along with all the ferrets in the ferret room. He was purchased in Nov 2007, which means he was likely born Sept of 2007. Slick likes Marshall's peanut butter treats, and will give you a kiss to get one.  Christine is a petite girl. She reportedly loves playing "hide and seek" and enjoys baths and ear rubs. She was purchased in Mar of 2006, which means she was likely born Jan of 2006. Both of these ferrets have been with very young children-Christine allowed herself to be carried around by a toddler, Slick was more timid with the children but was never aggressive toward them. Vet check and distemper done on 8/21/08 (AMC).  Additional health check done on 5/6/09 following their return to the shelter (LS).

Jeff and Kiri arrived as victims of the economy.  They have been together for most of their lives, so they must stay together.  Jeff is a big sweetheart.  He is playful and active.  He gets along well with other ferrets and has not shown any nipping or biting behavior, although sometimes he does get a little mouthy during play.  According to owner report, Jeff was born Jan-April 2006-the condition of his teeth supports this.  Kiri is a beautiful girl who never did any biting prior to the changes in the amount of attention she was getting.  Once she was spending more time in the cage, she started biting.  It seems to be a case of "any attention is good attention".  Here at the shelter, we have noticed that the biting seems to be her way of saying "pick me up", "I'm over stimulated" or "you startled me".  We believe the behavior will get better with time and attention.  Because of her biting, this pair is not appropriate for a home with children and is not recommended for first time ferret owners.  Kiri loves to dig in the dirt and has "aerated" the roots on a large plant here at the shelter.  She is likely about six months older than Jeff, meaning she was born July-Oct 2005.  Vet check and distemper done on 3/27/09 (AMC).

Jasper and Pumpkin arrived with Slick and Christine as the result of a divorce.  They are very sweet, playful ferrets who are getting better about using the litter pan.  Jasper has a special cat toy he loves.  He reportedly gives kisses.  Pumpkin doesn't give kisses, but enjoys having her tummy rubbed.  Both have been with children and dogs.  According to the person surrendering them, both were born 7/15/07.  The condition of Jasper's teeth are pretty consistent with this, however, we believe Pumpkin is about six month younger.  Vet check and distemper done on 5/8/09 (AMC).

June
Mushroom (aka Moose or Moosh)
is a very large ferret.  Eating was his best thing and he has been known to lean over his bed and eat if the food dish is close enough.  Moose came into the shelter with his brother and sister following a divorce.  The other ferrets were adopted as a pair.  Moose had not been listed for adoption at that time as he was scheduled for an ultrasound because of his abdomen (the ultrasound showed that because of his weigh his spleen will sometimes "fold" then later straighten itself out).  Moose is not a very active ferret at this time-he needs to loose some weight.  He will allow himself to be held and cuddled, but will give you a little nip when he feels he has had enough.  He will also sometimes nip when he wants attention.  Based on his former owner's report he was born 12/05.  Vet check and distemper shot done 3/12/09 (AMC), Ultrasound done 3/16/09 (LS).

Oliver  was brought to FVF (along with two other ferrets) by the mother or their owner.  According to the information received, the owner moved out of the family home and left the ferrets behind.  The woman who contacted FVF stated these are very nice ferrets, but that she did not have the time to care for them and they had been her daughter's rather than family pets.  All three are active and playful.  We have not seen any nipping or biting here at the shelter, although they will "grab" feet and ankles when excited (typical ferret behavior).  Oliver was likely born late in 2008.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/10/09 (AMC).

Carter and Wilson were brought to FVF (along with Oliver-now adopted) by the mother or their owner. Carter and Wilson got very excited by the shoes our vet was wearing, and decided they needed killing.  These were running type shoes and we suspect it was the rubbery soles.  According to report and the condition of their teeth, Carter and Wilson were likely born April-June of 2008.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/10/09 (AMC).

July
Vinnie
is a pretty dark sable girl.  She would make a great first ferret for someone.  She was surrendered when property managers changed at her owner's apartment building and the new manager would not allow her.  Vinnie is very active and playful.  She really wants to be around her person and constantly checks to see what you are doing.  She enjoys dangling toys and having her tummy tickled.  Her tail is bobbed-it appears that her mama was inexperienced and chewed it instead of the umbilical cord.  Vinnie isn't sure about other ferrets, she hadn't been exposed to them prior to coming here.  She has been introduced to some-the really active ones seem to frighten her and she ignores the others.  She is good about the litter pan in her cage, not so good outside of it.  She has been with children as young as 4.  She likes peanut butter yogis as a treat.  According to owner report, and the condition of her teeth she was likely born late spring or early summer of 2006.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/30/09 (AMC).

August
Marjorene
and Flora arrived via an area Petco when their owner no longer wanted them.  They are active and playful.  Marjorene is a large fluff ball, Flora is a tiny girl who sleeps very deeply.  They were originally picked up from the pet store by a FVF volunteer, they got along fine with her dogs and were very interested in her ferrets.  Here at the shelter they have transitioned into the ferret room with no issues and seem to love having a variety of playmates.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe they are about a year old, likely born spring of 2008.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/9/09 (AMC).

The person who adopted these girls also adopted a new arrival named Alpha.  His bio had not been posted and he had not been vet checked when they saw him.  They waited until he was available and adopted all three.

Taya and Meka arrived with two other ferrets (Tiger and Kira) as victims of the economy. Taya (whiter face) was born 6/06.  According to her former owner, she is hyper, but loving.  She will give little nips when she is playing, but not to hurt you.  Meka (very dark mask) was born 10/06.  She is described as energetic and loving.  These girls went to a home for several days, but returned when another ferret in the household started picking on them.  According to that family, both girls shoulder, are very good (but not perfect) about using the litter pan and are incredibly sweet ferrets.  They said both are very curious and lovable-Meka responds to squeak toys   The girls later spent just over two weeks in another home-please ask us about the circumstances under which they returned to FVF.  Meka and Taya are bonded and must stay together.  Vet check and distemper shots done 4/23/09 (AMC).

Brian arrived when his owner moved and could not take him along.  He is a sweet boy that is very people focused.  When he feels insecure he will run to his person for comfort.  He is unsure of other ferrets-but is learning that having other ferrets around may be an okay thing.  At this point he would be just fine as an only.  According to owner report, he is four (likely born spring or summer of 2005), although the condition of his teeth indicate he is as much as a year younger.  Vet check and distemper done on 7/23/09 (AMC).

Coco and Sable are very sweet little girls surrendered via Bay Area Humane.  They are calm and loving and would like a quieter forever home.  They would likely do okay with children as long as they are gentle.  We don't know if they have ever been with kids or other animals, although the volunteer who picked them up had them for a few days and does have cats.  They are doing fine in the "low energy" ferret room, they were overwhelmed with the high energy ferrets.  Based on the condition of their teeth, and owner report, we believe they were likely born early-mid 2005.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/9/09 (AMC).

Sept
Starvin' Marvin
came to FVF after being found stray in Green Bay.  He had been eating cat food left for feral cats when he was found.  He was reported to Bay Area Humane but no owner surfaced.  Based on his low body weight and poor coat, we believe he had been stray for some time.  The volunteer who housed him during his stray hold named him because the first two days all he did was eat, drink and sleep.  He is showing himself to be a very sweet, people focused ferret, but he has enjoyed the company of other ferrets as well.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 8/3/09 (AMC).  He was rechecked a week later to make sure what the vet was feeling was just his stomach full of food-it was.  Based on the condition of his teeth, he was likely born mid 2007.  He has a dead canine, which may be scheduled for extraction in the near future, although it is not bothering him at this time.

Steve was surrendered because his owner was moving and could not take him.  Steve was not great at using the litter pan at first, but got the idea very quickly-at least in the cage.  He is very active but has not shown any nipping behavior here at FVF.  He was thrilled to have other ferrets to play with and made the transition to the ferret room easily.  Because of this, he should not be considered as an "only".  He would likely make a good match for Zeus.  Based on the condition of his teeth and owner report, he was likely born around March of 2008.  Vet check done on 8/10/09 (AMC)-his distemper was done the same day at FVF as the vet ran a dose short.

Meemo and Bacardi arrived as the result of a divorce.  They are nice ferrets that according to their owner don't bite but sometimes nip during play.  They had been feed a very poor diet (cheap cat food) but transitioned very quickly to our shelter blend, emptying their bowl the first night.  They have been good about the litter pan while in their cage, while out playing it is not as dependable.  Based on the condition of their teeth, and owner report, they were likely born spring of 2007.   Vet check and distemper shots done on 5/29/09 (AMC).

Sabrina was surrendered because her owners had a baby and no longer had the time she deserved.  Her former owner describes her this way: Sabrina is a fun ferret.  She loves to come out of her cage and play.  She likes to drink Wine (NOT RECOMMENDED)- White Zins or White Grenache.  She has a tennis ball she likes to go after and then hide.  She likes to play with cats.  If you put her on her harness & leash, she will walk around in the grass in the yard, too.  She doesn't really snuggle but with the right love and attention, she could learn to snuggle.  Here at FVF she has been enjoying the company of other ferrets, so we would like to see her placed with at least one other ferret.  Based on owner report and the condition of  her teeth she was likely born spring or summer of 2005.  Vet check and distemper done on 7/23/09 (AMC).

Jamal and Dev arrived mid August because their owner didn't feel like she was able to give them the home they deserved.  She told us that Jamal had been purchased in Jan 09, and was 8 mos old at the time.  Examination of his teeth seems to indicate that she misunderstood his age-we believe he was probably 8-12 weeks old.  We estimate he was probably born around Sept or Oct 2008. According to the person surrendering him, he is very hyper, doesn't like to be held and will wiggle away if you try.  He likes people and active play-at the shelter he seems to like chase games.  He also loves beanie baby type toys and will stash them under the bed.  Because he seemed lonely, Dev was purchased in late may of 2009. He is the dominant ferret, although Jamal is much faster than he is.  He likes toys that jingle.  He will allow himself to be held for a little while IF he is in the mood.  According to report, he will nip at feet and ankles when he wants attention or is trying to play with you.  We haven't really seen that at the shelter, but here he isn't confined to a cage either so he can burn off some of his energy.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we believe he was born Feb or March of 2009.  Both ferrets were vet checked on 8/27/09 (AMC) and Dev had a distemper shot at that time.  Jamal arrived up to date on both rabies and distemper shots (verified All Creatures 3/1/09).

Cubs, Bears and Oliver arrived as the result of allergies and a move out of state.  Cubs and Bears had been purchased together and are very nice ferrets that had obviously been loved and cared for.  Bears is described as shy but playful, while Cubs is sensitive and tends to stress easily although he is the dominant ferret.  He will follow you around.  They were born the first week of June, 2008.  Their owner had them up to date on rabies until 11/19/09 and distemper until 12/7/09.  They were vet checked on 9/10/09 (AMC).  Oliver was adopted from FVF to be their friend in June-he is now bonded with them and because he had already been split from his original ferret family, must stay with them.  Oliver was originally brought to FVF by the mother of his owner, because his owner had moved out of the family home and left her three ferrets behind.  Oliver is very active, always on the go.  He will tackle your leg and then run off wanting to be chased.  He is an incredibly happy ferret, just living to play.  Oliver was likely born late in 2008.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/10/09 (AMC).

Daisy and Lily are very sweet girls surrendered because their owner was having a baby and didn't have the finances to keep them.  Lily is the darker girl and is described as very affectionate and loving.  She "seeks out people" according to her former owner.  She will reportedly sit in your arms when you take a shower, but we haven't tested that at FVF.  Daisy is more hyper and likes candy-although we do NOT recommend letting her have any.  Neither has any history of biting.  According to the condition of their teeth and owner report, they were likely born mid 2008.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 9/10/09 (AMC).

October

Colorado Jack also arrived from Totally Ferret.  He had been at Dumb Friends League since 3/22/09.  According to what we were told, he had arrived stray and had apparently been put in with another ferret that had been surrendered the day before.  That ferret (Bear) is over 8 years old and adrenal but Jack bonded to him.  An attempt was made to place one of them in a foster home; Jack became very ill.  The foster home did not work out and he was reunited with Bear and started eating again.  Since getting here we have noticed both have formed other ferret friendships-recently Jack started sharing a play pen with Tiny Einnie and Jinx (see below) and two other ferrets not yet ready for adoption. He would be a good match for either.  At his vet visit, he had very low blood sugar so we started him on prednisolone 2x daily-he has now been weaned off.  At his age, we believe the problem was a combination of not eating while separated from Bear in Colorado, then the long car trip to WI, followed by an adjustment period here.  He now seems happy and content and has shown himself to be a great war dancer.  He definitely likes human attention and does a great "legless ferret impersonation.  He would likely do best with another older or mellow ferret .  Vet check and distemper shot done on 6/30/09 (AMC).

Jinx was surrendered because her owner had two jobs and was going to school and didn't feel like he was giving her enough attention.  She is a very sweet girl but when she is really playing hard she can get nippy.  We believe gentle correction will eventually get her to stop the nipping during play-it seems to be from over excitement rather than malice.  Jinx is a great climber and gets places you would never imagine.  She loves attention from her person and is getting used to being with other ferrets.  We made the attempt to pair her with Polly since they arrived at about the same time and are about the same age, but Jinx was fearful of Polly's high energy play.  Jinx is currently being housed with Colorado Jack and Tiny Einnie and is doing great with them.  She would love a home with Jack..  She was born Dec 21-27, 2008.  Vet check and distemper done on 9/10/09 (AMC).

Stinker and Ozzie arrived after they broke out of their cage and killed a bird.  According to the information received, Stinker is a "cage pinger" meaning he will bite and pull on his cage bars, which is how they escaped.  He loves playing in grocery bags.  He also really likes glittery type cat balls and streamer toys.  He was reportedly born early to mid 2007, the condition of his teeth support this.  He had two damaged teeth removed on 9/17/09 (LS) and is doing great.  Ozzie loves balls and feather toys.  Like Stinker he loves playing with grocery bags.  According to the person surrendering them he was born spring or summer of 2008-the condition of his teeth supports this.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 9/10/09 (AMC).

Polly arrived with Bear and George (see above) but since they were so much older than she is we decided to find Polly a more age appropriate playmate.  Polly is very active and does sometimes nip.  We believe gentle correction will eventually get her to stop the nipping during play-it seems to be from over excitement rather than malice.  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was likely born the very beginning of 2009.  We attempted to pair her with another young ferret that arrived around the same time as she did, but that ferret was fearful of Polly's high energy approach to play.   Vet check and distemper done on 9/10/09 (AMC).  Polly was returned to FVF in April 2010-she was just not bonding with the other ferret in the household and her energy levels were a bit more than her new owner could handle.

Porkchop has bounced between a home and a pet store twice due to issues in his owner's life which caused her to return him, then eventually repurchase him.  When he was originally purchased there were four other ferrets in the home that came into FVF this spring and had all been placed by the time Porkchop arrived.  He is very active and needs at least one other ferret to play with.  He would probably do best with a male ferret since he does try to dominate and can be kind of rough on a small female.  He likes to play "hide and seek" with his person.  He gives kisses and loves baths.  He drinks out of a water bottle mow since he likes to play in the water dishes.  He also likes to dig food out of the dish.  He is good with the litter pan as long as it is clean.  He could stand to have his teeth cleaned, although we have noted the tartar is coming off with the shelter blend diet.  His owner reported that he is about a year old, although his teeth indicate he is likely 6 months older with an estimated birth date of Mar 2008.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 9/10/09 (AMC).

Lucky Boy was left in our emergency drop area without any information-not even his name.  It was commented that he was a "lucky boy" that the emergency drop was available, hence his name.  Lucky Boy has shown himself to be a very friendly people focused ferret.  He will run and play out of his cage, but he checks back to see what his person is up to.  He loves to be played with and likes games like "blankie".  Based on the condition of his teeth we estimate he was likely born summer or fall of 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 10/7/09 (AMC).

November
The "furious" five:
Kahlua Rain
and Yukon Jack originally arrived as the result of allergies.  They were adopted in March of 2008, but came back to the shelter (with three other ferrets) in Sept 2009 due to economic challenges.  Kahlua Rain loves to run and play as much as possible and began "breaking out" of her cage when her owner developed severe allergies and could not let her out.  According to prior information, and her short term foster mom, she tolerates cats and dogs.  She gives kisses.  She was born on 9/24/06.  Yukon Jack loves to be held and played with.  He knows his name and will come when called.  He likes to fall asleep on your lap.  His favorite game is hide and seek and he gets very excited when you find him.  He thinks cats are big ferrets and plays with them just like he plays with Rain.  He was born on 6/24/06.  Both ferrets like Apple Jacks cereal as a treat-but don't give them more than a piece or two each day!  They also like peanut butter treats and playing in a rice box.  Both are very good about using the litter pan and haven't had any accidents while at FVF.  Vet check and distemper done on 9/30/09 (LS).  Rain and Jack must stay together.
Fatty
is a very sweet boy.  He likes to be held and cuddled.  He has been having some trouble with hind leg weakness and has been put on twice daily doses of prednisolone for insulinoma, which makes him a
special needs ferret.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we believe he was born mid 2005.  Vet check and distemper done on 9/30/09 (LS).
Squirrel (2) adores Fatty when in the cage, but when she is out she is independent.  She loves rice boxes and peanut butter treats.  She is a playful, happy ferret.  Based on the condition of her teeth she was likely born summer of 2006.  If the five ferrets can't find a home together, Squirrel could be adopted with Onyx.  Onyx loves jingle eggs and tennis balls.  She ADORED the foster mom's dogs.  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was likely born mid 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 9/30/09 (LS).

Milky and his brother (went to the bridge 7/9/09) were adopted in Nov 2008, but returned on 3/17/09 due to a move.  The new landlord had said "small animals" were fine but after the family moved he stated he "hated" ferrets because "they make the property stink".  The former adopters were crushed as they had thought the ferrets were allowed and are now in a lease.  They described the boys as "the best ferrets ever".  Milky has been clicker trained and has been with children under six years old.  They originally came from a home with three other ferrets.  According to that owner's report, they had been adopted from a Humane Society and had come from a home together-Milky has never been without another ferret.  He would be a good match for Ziggy.  He isn't much of a cuddler and would rather be off and running with other ferrets and having active play with his person.  He does a good war dance.  He likes cats, but has never been around dogs.  The condition of his teeth and owner report indicate he was likely born around April of 2004.  Vet check and distemper done on 10/2/08 (AMC).  Milky had adrenal surgery on 6/11/09 (LS).  He has recovered beautifully and is ready to go his forever home.   Milky has gone to a long term foster situation with one of our volunteers.  He will be in that home until the ferret with him crosses the bridge, then he will become a permanent resident of our shelter.

December
Ziggy
was surrendered to FVF when both his ferret friend and his dog friend went to the bridge on the same day, his other ferret friend had gone a short time prior.  His prior owner had gotten him several years earlier and was not interested in getting another ferret, but understood he was lonely and decided to surrender him.  According to reports, he sometimes nips when playing, and tends to play rough with other ferrets-we have not seen either of those behaviors here at FVF.  We have noticed that Ziggy has a strange gait, our vet could not find any problems with his legs or hips and believes it is either from an old pelvic injury or possibly nerve damage.  Ziggy isn't bothered by it, he hops and war dances with the best of the ferrets in the ferret room.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we believe Ziggy was born early to mid 2005.

Ellie Mae arrived with her brothers (still listed for adoption) via Lincoln County Humane after they were found in a cat carrier on the side of a country road.  She is active and playful and has not shown any nipping while at the shelter.    Based on the condition of her teeth, we believe Ellie Mae was born later winter/early spring of 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/10/09.

Cooper is a large, sweet boy who was left outside an area cat rescue.  They had him for awhile and decided to transfer him to FVF to increase his chance for a home.  Cooper loves nest boxes and a special ball.  He gives kisses and is very playful.  He is happy to be in with other ferrets, but we have noticed that when play gets too rough for him he comes to the nearest person for comfort and reassurance.  Based on the condition of his teeth and general body condition, we think he was probably born early in 2009.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 10/23/09 (AMC).

Moose is a big beautiful boy who was surrendered after his owner moved and left him at his grandparents' home.  Moose was thrilled to get to FVF as he had been kept in a garage up until his surrender.  Even though he is deaf, Moose has not shown any biting or nipping behavior here at the shelter, nor was any reported when he was surrendered.  He is very playful, but does tend to be a little cautious when first being introduced to a new environment (you can tell by the bottle brush tail).  He has been exposed to other ferrets here at the shelter, and he has tried to play with every one he has met.  He would be happiest with a playmate although as of mid November he has not had the opportunity to bond with any of the ferrets here and could still go as an "only".  Vet check and distemper done on 11/13 (AMC).

Gizzy and Nert are more victims of the economy.  According to the people surrendering them, Gizzy is very people friendly and likes attention.  He loves to play in boxes and can get mouthy during play.  He was born 1/08.  Nert is described as more hyper than Gizzy, but a cuddler.  Like his brother, he likes to play in boxes and gets mouthy during play.  He was born 3/08.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 10/23/09 (AMC).

Zeus arrived after his cage mate died of cancer.  He was surrendered instead of found a new friend because his owner is deployed overseas and although she took good care of the ferrets, his wife is not a "ferret person".  They discussed their options and decided the best thing to do for Zeus was to surrender him to FVF.  Zeus is very playful and active.  He likes to tackle your ankles but does not bite then.  He does the "big pink mouth" but isn't a nippy ferret.  He doesn't have a favorite friend at FVF yet, he MUST be with other ferrets.  He has lived with a cat, but has never been with dogs or kids.  Based on the condition of his teeth, he was likely born spring or summer of 2006.  Vet check done on 7/31/09 (AMC).  His former owner had his rabies and distemper done on 5/17/09.

Ruby arrived with four other ferrets because their owner lost his job and had to move in with relatives.  All five of the ferrets were ill with giardia when they arrived.  They were treated for three weeks and isolated for another month.  Post treatment testing found no signs of giardia.  Ruby is very energetic.  If she is bored, she will dig all the food out of her dish.  She likes to dig anyway and would probably enjoy a dig box.  She has a favorite toy and loves it when you wiggle your fingers at her.  Ruby is missing two toenails on her left hind foot.  She is also missing her first and second incisor.  According to owner report, she was born early in 2008, however the condition of her teeth makes her appear older.  Her overall condition aside from her teeth is consistent with the early 2008 birth date.  Vet check and distemper done on 10/07/09 (amc).
