January 2011

Shawnee arrived on Thanksgiving day along with her sister who very unexpectedly went to the bridge a couple of weeks after arriving (based on the symptoms and rapid unset, we believe it was a spinal tumor).   These girls had been surrendered at a small area humane society and the person surrendering had not given them any information (not even the ferrets' names).  Based on our observations at FVF, Shawnee is playful and likes human interaction, but does get mouthy during play.  She is doing great with other younger, energetic ferrets and should not be considered as an "only".  Because she can get mouthy, we would not recommend her for a first time ferret family or a home with small children.  Based on the condition of her teeth, we believe she was 9mos to a year old when she arrived.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 11/26/10 (AMC).

Basil and Jolt are young males that came to FVF from two different sources but get along great and would like a home together.  They were briefly adopted but came back because Basil will reportedly dig at carpet and chew cords-although we have not seen the cord chewing here at the shelter.  They need a home where they will get a lot of out of the cage time and human interaction and stimulating play.  If they get bored, they may entertain themselves by being naughty.  According to the information received from Basil's original owner he was born 4/5/10 and has a lot of energy.  He is litter trained, but will try to fake you out by getting in his pan and "pretending to go" in order to get let out.  He had been fed Zupreem in his old home, which is also part of our shelter blend.  He likes interactive "teaser" toys and balls.  His former owner had him up to date on both distemper and rabies (LS 7/5/10).  Jolt is 9 months to 1 year old as of Nov 2010.  He arrived as a stray via Bay Area Humane.  He is also very energetic and friendly.  He is hit and miss with the litter pan from what we have seen here.  The cleaner the pan, the more likely he is to use it.  He is doing fine on our shelter blend.  Vet check and distemper done on 11/26/10 (AMC).  Basil got a general health check at the same time.

Tulio and Miguel came from another shelter in CO.  They were surrendered because their owner could not afford to care for them anymore.  Both are microchipped and had been fed a very good diet.  It is obvious they had been well cared for.  According to owner report and what we have seen at FVF, Tulio is a very dominant ferret, though he does get along with Miguel and an older female ferret he came with (she is currently not listed for adoption because of her age and fragility).  He will reportedly dig at carpets-we have seen he digs in his food and water dish (he does drink out of a bottle at this time).  He will sometimes try to dominate people when he plays, but he is not mean or aggressive with them.  Miguel is a sweetheart.  He plays with his brother and would do okay with other ferrets if Tulio wasn't so dominant.  They lived with a cat in their old home, nothing is noted about Tulio trying to bully it.  Based on information provided, they were born 12/06, though their teeth indicate they are about a year younger.  Vet check and distemper done on 7/5/10 (AMC).

Bonnie and Clyde arrived with four other ferrets (two now at the bridge) via Shawano Humane.  The person who brought there claimed to have found them after an eviction, but as soon as the FVF shelter mom heard the ferrets' names she correctly identified that person and knew the story was a lie.  They are very good with the litter pan and haven't done any nipping or biting here at the shelter.  They had been feed a questionable diet with lots of junk food, but quickly adjusted to our shelter blend and appropriate ferret treats.  They aren't really bouncy ferrets, but they are sweet, curious and active.  Clyde had adrenal surgery on 12/23/10 (LS).  Bonnie has a chipped canine, but the vet did not feel it needed to be removed.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe both were born mid to late 2005.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 6/17/10 (AMC).

Bell arrived at FVF about 2 ½ years after the death of her "brother".  The owner no longer had time for her and had decided at that point that she was lonely for another ferret.  Belle is a little sweetheart who likes pretty much every other ferret she has been introduced to.  Reportedly, she nips when she is excited but we have not seen that here at FVF.  She has been with dogs, cats and kids under 10 and has gotten along with all of them.  Based on owner report and the condition of her teeth, she was probably born mid 2005.  She had adrenal surgery on 1/3/11 (LS) and is recovering nicely.  Vet check and distemper done on 11/15/10 (amc).

Spidey (grey) and Hammy (white) are nice girls who had been surrendered to FVF about two years ago, where adopted, then returned mid 2010 due to the economy.  Spidey is very active while Hammy is more laid back.  Neither has shown any biting behavior here at FVF, although when Spidey gets "crazy" she sometimes will put her mouth on you.  Based on the information given the first time they were surrendered (then named "brown one" and "white one") they were born April of 2006.

February 2011
Bear
and George arrived with their sister Polly (adopted) because of upheaval in their owner's life.  After over a year at FVF, we can tell you these boys are very sweet and loving.  George does have an extreme sock fetish and will attempt to pull them off your feet.  They  love having other ferrets to play with and do well with both older and younger ferrets.  When they are all wound up and playing they may do some nipping, but there hasn't been any biting outside of that.  According to the condition of their teeth and owner report, George and Bear were both likely born mid 2005.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 12/20/10 (LS).  George had adrenal surgery and a dental cleaning on 5/13/10 (LS). The chordoma on his tail was left alone since it is not growing and doesn't bother him.

Oreo and Casper arrived with their brothers (now adopted) when their owner was no longer interested in them.  Both are wonderful ferrets that would be great for a first time ferret owner.  They aren't perfect with the litter pan, but most aren't.  Neither has done any nipping or biting here at the shelter.  They do well with other ferrets.  Based on the condition of their teeth, they were probably born mid 2006.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 6/17/10 (AMC).

Colton is one of the sweetest boys imaginable but he is a special needs ferret.  He arrived at FVF in Sept 2010 from a small humane society that was not able to properly care for him.  The vet at that shelter had diagnosed him with Giardia and had started him on treatment.  His treatment continued after arrival at FVF and we were eventually able to rid him of that issue.  Unfortunately, the prolonged illness has effected his GI system and it is very rare that he has formed stool.  He is most likley now suffering with IBD or a similar issue.  He eats Purina Sensitive Systems cat food, which prevents him from transitioning into the main ferret population even though he does like other ferrets.  In addition, he gets probiotics.   This regiment has managed to put weight on Colton and he seems happy and is active and playful.  He does occassionally grind when eating and we treat these flair ups with carafate and steriods.  He was treated by one of our vets (LS) on 9/13/10 and got his distemper shot at that time.  If you have the heart and time for a special needs ferret with a potentially shortened life expectancy, this extra special little boy would be a great addition to your family.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we believe he was born late summer or early fall of 2007.

March 2011
Teko, Boots and George
(vet record under "George 2") arrived at FVF under a foster agreement in October of 2010.  The owner stated the reason for the arrangement was a difficult pregnancy.  Although she clearly loved these ferrets, all three were underweight and stressed.  It was discovered that there had been some recent history of food deprivation caused by the owner's health issues.  While at our volunteer's home, all three began recovering with proper food and exercise.  One of the biggest issues seemed to be cage stress.  Teko has broken canines, most likely from "cage pinging".  He is very small and has been known to escape from ferret playpens.  Our volunteer classified him as "a wild and crazy guy" once he was feeling better.  He was obsessed with their work shoes and would try to take/bite them.  George is described as the "caretaker" of the group.  At the volunteer's home he constantly checked on them and wanted to know where they were.  His care taking extended to our volunteer's ferrets and large dog.  He also showed a tendency to be clingy with the volunteer, wanting to be near her at all times.  George had been the most underweight when they arrived; he is now fully recovered.  Boots however had the most issues with food.  He had to be feed very slowly and a few pieces at time because of nausea (apparently caused by suddenly having access to "rich" food again).  He was also treated with a low dose of steroids when he first arrived to help with weight gain and maintaining his blood glucose.  He also seemed "very sad" the first few days at the volunteer's home.  The trio came to the shelter in Nov and saw the vet on 11/15/10 (AMC).  By this point they were all doing well and they had their distemper shots.  They have become happy, healthy ferrets while at FVF and we were very happy when they were officially surrendered on 2/15/11.  These three will make a wonderful addition to a family-they have not shown any nipping behaviors, have been around very young children, and are very people focused.  All three like the water and will take a shower with you if you let them.  They also like squirt bottles and baths.  Based on the condition of their teeth and owner report, they were likely born between Oct 2007 and Mar 2008.

Bella and Royce were among ten ferrets transferred to FVF from a shelter in CO.  They are nice, playful ferrets, and it was hoped that sending them here would find them their forever home since they had been at that shelter over a year.  Royce is lovable and playful.  His activity level has shot up since his adrenal surgery on 12/23/10 (LS).  He has recovered beautifully and can't wait to find a forever home with his younger sister Bella.  Bella loves Royce, but isn't thrilled with other ferrets and will fight with them.  She is very busy and isn't really interested in cuddling, but would be happy to have interactive play with her new family.  Original paperwork had called Bella "mean" but we absolutely disagree with that!  Bella sometimes does excited nipping, which could have been misunderstood.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe Bella was born mid 2007, while Royce was likely born mid 2005.  Both had their vet checks and distemper shots on 7/5/10 (AMC) and dental cleanings on 7/16/10 (NH).  Royce does have very yellow stained teeth, which the cleaning did not help.  It seems different from "normal" aging teeth, so we are not sure what caused the staining.

April 2011
Daxter
(sable), Snowflake (dilute silver) and Bandit (grey)  arrived when their owners felt they could no longer care for them.  Very little information was provided with them, but the family did tell FVF that Snowflake does not like children and will bite them, but is very well litter trained.  They also said that Bandit digs in water dishes.  Daxter was not litter trained when they arrived, but he is getting better while in the cage.  At FVF we have seen that all four of the ferrets are curious and like people.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe Bandit was born early spring of 2008, Daxter and Snowflake summer of 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/4/10 (AMC).  The fourth ferret in this picture is Crackers, who went to the bridge unexpectedly in October, 2010.

Sargent Pepper and Harrison (whiter) arrived with their brother and sister when their owner no longer had time for them.  Based on owner report Sarge likes N-Bones and cups and tubes to play with.  He has never done any biting.  Based on the condition of his teeth and report, he was likely born late in 2007.  Harrison is about a year younger and likes to play chase games.  His favorite games involve small balls and other small toys.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 4/27/11.

Zorro arrived at Fox Valley Ferret via Bay Area Humane Society.  He arrived with an older female who died early in April following surgery attempting to remove a very large abdominal mass.  Zorro is very playful and friendly.  He has been making friends in the ferret room since he lost his sister.  He has not shown any nipping or biting behavior here at the shelter.  He is very vocal when he plays and will tackle your ankles while playing but he is not mean about it-it is play.  He had his vet check and distemper shot on Feb 8, 2011.

May 2011
Barbossa  and Ragetti
arrived because their owners had purchased three kits in a two week period and ended up being overwhelmed.  According to owner report, Barbossa likes to dig, chews ears, doesn't like any treats, digs in his food, chews his dishes and will destroy stuffed toys or beds.  At the shelter, we have seen the fabric destruction and the food digging, but as long as he is kept occupied and stimulated he is a typical kit.  Ragetti likes to swim and is more of a cuddler, though he will do some nibbling given the chance.  Both are very playful and transitioned from Marshall farms food to shelter blend almost immediately with no issues at all.  They are learning the litter box and use a water bottle to avoid water dish swimming.  Vet check and distemper done on 4/21/11 (amc).

Eleanor and Rupert arrived with their brothers when their owner no longer had time for them.  Based on owner report Eleanor is about 3, although her teeth seem to indicate that she is 2 or 2 ½.  (born Jan-Jun 2009).   Her favorite toy is a mini kong, but that would be a supervised only toy.  She is very friendly and people focused.  The person surrendering her told us she was not interested in the other ferrets, but she is obviously very attached to her brother.  She is pretty good with the litter pan, especially if it is kept clean.  Rupert was left at the home about eight months before he was surrendered.  He is probably the same age as Eleanor, perhaps a little younger.  He is still learning the litter box.  He does sometimes nip when he is excited and playing, but doesn't mean anything by it.  No information about personality was given with him, but here at the shelter he has been very sweet and people focused.  Vet check and distemper shots done 4/27/11 (amc).

Max and Zachariah arrived when their owner could no longer afford to care for them.  It was originally thought that Zachariah was a senior ferret based on the condition of his teeth.  After watching him and taking into consideration his overall body condition and the fact that he is a neural tube defect ferret, he was aged out at about 3 (likely born early 2007).  He had a dental done on 3/15/10 (LS)-he had to have three teeth removed and another fell out.  He is recovering well and we believe his energy levels will improve now that his mouth doesn't hurt.  His former owner described him as "mostly sleeping, but plays sometimes".  Max is a typical high energy ferret.  He is hyper and gets into everything.  He also climbs and will mouth during play.  He is very vocal.  Based on his teeth, he was likely born about the same time as Zach-which agrees with owner report.  Vet check and distemper done on 12/20/10 (LS).

June 2011
Ghita
arrived with her sister Nicia (who unexpectedly went to the bridge 5/24/11).  Both were pretty raggedy looking when they arrived but brought in gorgeous coats.  Ghita was likely born late in 2006.  According to the person who had to surrender them, they had been fed Totally Ferret (which is part of our shelter blend) and love ferretvite.  Neither seems interested in other treats.  They liked to play with the cats in the household and were okay around dogs.  Ghita will dig at carpeting.  We have not noticed any nipping or biting here at the shelter.  Ghita would like a home with another ferret about her age.  She might be a good match for Buddy (see below).  Vet check and distemper done on 8/4/10 (AMC).

CoCo (aka Lummox) and Charlie arrived from different homes but quickly became friends.  Charlie is a very active boy who is very friendly, but needs a lot of attention and interaction.  He likes balls and other ferrets.  He will sometimes nip when he is playing.  He has been around kids as young as three.  Based on the condition of his teeth and owner report he was probably born early in 2010.  CoCo is a big fluffy boy who is very sweet but will demand attention if he doesn't think he is getting enough.  If you ignore him too long, he will nip your ankle as if to say "excuse me, I will not be ignored).  He will let you hold him without trying to get away, just loving the attention.  Both ferrets are very talkative, especially when they get playing.  CoCo was born 6/6/10.  Vet check and distemper done on 5/18/11 (amc).  Adoption pending.

Nola is a tiny little girl who arrived from Lincoln County Humane.  She was fond hiding under a porch and was kept for a week, but not claimed.  It looks like her tail was snagged during her stray time, as there is a chunk of fur missing.  Nola loves people and being held and played with.  She has not shown any nipping or biting behavior while at FVF.  We have tried to introduce her to other ferrets, but she gets very upset and hisses and screams at them.  She very obviously wants to be an "only".  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was probably born Dec 2010 or Jan 2011.  Vet check and distemper done on 5/18/11.

Milo is a lot of ferret to love.  He needs a home were he will have lots of out of cage time so that he can loose some of his extra weight.  He is very mellow and likes to be held and cuddled.  He was surrendered because his owner was expecting a baby and was somewhat overwhelmed with Milo and the other pets in the house.  Milo has been wonderful with the litter pan here at the shelter but may have some accidents when he is in a larger area.  He reportedly loves shoes, but nips at feet and toes (typical ferret behavior).  He gets along well with small dogs, but will chase and bite cats.  He loves feathered "chase" toys.  He would be good in a home with another ferret, as long as that ferret was not overly dominant or aggressive with him.  The person surrendering him had him for about a year and a half and believed him to be about 5, however, his teeth indicate that he is more likely about 3.  This would mean he was likely born early in 2008 or late in 2007.  Vet check and distemper done on 5/25/11 (amc).

Rocko II was surrendered because his owner no longer had time for him.  Based on the information provided, Rocko is energetic and likes to play.  He has been with a golden retriever and played with the dog.  He has not been with children.  He was with another ferret until about a year and a half ago when the owners graduated from college and each took a ferret.  Rocko likes stuffed toys and ferretone.  He was eating low quality ferret food from Walmart, but had no trouble transitioning to shelter blend.  He likes hammocks and cushioned beds.  He had his vet check and distemper shot on 6/10/11 (amc).  Based on owner report of purchase date, and the condition of his teeth, we believe Rocko was born in Dec of 2006 or Jan of 2007.

July 2011

Apollo
and Yuri were surrendered in late summer 2010 with another little boy who went to the bridge very unexpectedly on Halloween 2010.  Yuri is a fairly active little girl who likes to play and snuggle with other ferrets.  She loves interactive play, but does not like to be kissed or put by your face.  Based on the condition of her teeth she was probably born summer or fall of 2006.    Yuri had a chordoma removed on 3/17/11 and has healed beautifully.  We anticipate her tail should have all its fur back in the next few months.  Apollo is more mellow and is more willing to be held for a little bit during play time.  He would really like a home for just the two of them, although he will tolerate other mellow ferrets.  He gives kisses.  Apollo loves tennis balls and a certain type of stuffed ball and they seem to be the only type of toy he is interested in.  Based on the condition of his teeth, he was likely born early to mid 2007.  Neither has shown any nipping or biting behavior here at the shelter.  Both Vet check and distemper shots done on 9/13/10 (LS).

Bonnie and Clyde are part of a foursome who arrived when their owners had a baby who was severely allergic to them.  All four had been extremely well cared for and have absolutely no nipping or biting behaviors.  According to the people surrendering them, Bonnie is "shy, mischievous and friendly".  To hold her you must cuddle her like a baby.  She is pretty good with the litter box as long as it is kept clean.  Clyde is described as a cuddle bug who loves people and human interaction.  He is also reportedly a "night owl".  He is said to be well litter trained.  They use a water bottle and transitioned well to the shelter blend food from Kaytee Fiesta.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe both were born early in 2010.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 7/8/11 (amc).

Ali (female) and JoJo (male) were surrendered after their owner repeatedly left them at his mother's home for extended periods as he moved in and out of apartments which did not allow pets.  After the last time she told him he had to make permanent arrangements or she would.  After he failed to find them a home, or provide food and bedding for some time, she contacted Fox Valley Ferret.  According to her, they are very nice ferrets (which we agree with) and they have never bitten or nipped.  They love human interaction and will play with a variety of toys.  They drink out of water bottles.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe they were born mid 2009 to early 2010.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 7/8/11 (amc).

Squirt came to the shelter when his owner's health became so bad so could no longer care for him.  He was with an older female, who recently went to the bridge.  He is good with other ferrets as long as they aren't large dominant males.  He is good with people and has not bit here at the shelter, though he does some excited nipping.  He loves to play and he will cuddle when he has tired himself out.  His favorite toy is a stuffed blue bunny.  He gets upset when it is even taken away to be washed.  He likes ferretone and ferretvite.  His date of birth is recorded as 6/18/08.  He is NOT a Marshall's ferret.  His vet check and distemper shot was done on 6/10/11.

Loki and Nibbles are part of a foursome who arrived when their owners had a baby who was severely allergic to them.  All four had been extremely well cared for and have absolutely no nipping or biting behaviors.  According to the people surrendering them, Loki is very mischievous, likes to get into trouble and likes to play.  They said he is "moody" and each day can be different as far as whether he will snuggle or not.  He isn't very well litter trained.  Nibbles loves to be held.  He is playful, but also a cuddler.  He is better with the litter box than his brother.  They use a water bottle and transitioned well to the shelter blend food from Kaytee Fiesta.  Based on the condition of their teeth, we believe both were born early in 2010.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 7/8/11 (amc).

Diesel arrived when his owner lost his job and was forced to move to a place he could not have him.  He is a very active young ferret and his name fits him.  He is going to be a big boy.  He likes other ferrets and did well with a volunteer's large dog.  He is pretty well litter trained and has not shown anything beyond typical baby ferret mouthy behavior-no nipping or biting behavior.  According to his purchase information, he was born the last week of January, 2011.  Bet check and distemper booster done on 6/15/11.

Girl was surrendered to BAHS because her owner's mother was getting new carpeting.  Girl was the pet of a 12-year-old and is very people friendly.  She is still getting used to the concept of a litter pan and is hit and miss with it.  She has a lot of energy and enjoys active play.  She has been tried with a couple of other ferrets and she has made it very clear she wishes to be an "only".  She will need a home with a lot of interactive play and attention.  Based on the condition of her teeth and owner report, we believe she was born early in 2009.  Vet check and distemper done on 4/7/11 (amc).

August

Twizzler
is a very sweet boy who was left in an apartment when his owner moved out.  Her roommate was caring for him, but could not afford his veterinary needs.  He had adrenal surgery and mast cell tumors removed on 7/22/11.  His recovery was difficult, and we were not sure he was going to make it.  He did eventually start feeling better and showed himself to be a typical middle aged ferret.  He wants to play and likes interactive games like "blankie", but will also snuggle with you when he is done playing and exploring.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we estimate he was born summer of 2007.  Distemper shot was done at Fox Valley Ferret Shelter on 8/28/11.

Polar and Billie arrived separately but make a very nice pair.  Polar arrived via Bay Area Humane when his owner when his owner went to jail "for a long time".  He is a very sweet boy, obviously well taken care of.  He is good with the litter pan, although he does occasionally have an accident.  He hasn't shown any nipping or biting aside from normal overexcited play mouthing.  He was an only ferret, but quickly settled in with other ferrets and should not be considered as an only anymore.  He sometimes gives kisses.  He was briefly adopted into a home, but was "too much" for the older female ferrets in that household and was returned to the shelter.  Based on the condition of his teeth, we believe he was born early to mid 2010.  Vet check and distemper done on 6/10/11. Billie was left in our emergency drop with the explanation "owner abandoned".  No other information was given.  Here at the shelter we found her to be a very clingy ferret, but a fear nipper.  The nipping typically takes place when you are reaching to take her out of something.  The first nip happened when she was being removed from the carrier she arrived in.  She nips and releases-she is not a bite and hold ferret.  We believe she will get over this behavior once she feels safe and secure.  Based on the condition of her teeth we believe she was probably born summer or fall of 2010.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/24/11.

Blaze was born on June 6, 2007.  She is obsessed with toes-in other words, she's a ferret.  She gives kisses on arms or hands, but sometimes it is to soften/clean the area prior to delivering a little nip (this doesn't happen very often anymore).  She will cuddle, but only for as long as SHE decides.  She is a hoarder and will carry odd things (like nail polish) off to her stash.  She likes raisin flavored treats and doesn't mind baths. Vet check and distemper shot done on 8/16/11 (LS).

Dart and Ozzie were originally adopted into a home in 2009, but were recently returned due to upheavals in the family's life.  According to that family, the ferrets are best with the litter pan when it is kept clean.  They are both playful and friendly.  They recommend using a water bottle because the ferrets reportedly "snorkel" in the water bowl.  They also reportedly like to play in shallow pools.  Dart is a very active ferret who likes to climb his cage. He lives up to his name. He likes ferretone and grabbing socks. Prior to his first adoption he was good about the litter pan in the cage but needed some reminders outside of it. We are estimating he was born late winter or early spring of 2005, based on original owner report and the condition of his teeth.  Ozzie and his brother Stinker originally arrived after they broke out of their cage and killed a bird.  Ozzie loves balls and feather toys.  He loves playing with grocery bags.  According to the person surrendering them he was born spring or summer of 2008-the condition of his teeth supports this.  Vet check and distemper done on 7/8/11 (AMC).  Dentals done on 8/3/11 (LS).

September 2011

Lily (aka Lily II) arrived from a home in Superior WI when the person who rescued her realized she could not provide for her veterinary needs.  Lily was full blown adrenal, and underwent surgery for it on 8/18/11.  Her surgery was successful and we expect her to bring in a full coat in a few months.  Her energy levels have increased since the surgery and she is showing herself to be a very playful, active little girl.  She gives kisses.  Based on the condition of her teeth, she was probably born summer of 2007.  Distemper shot given at Lakeside on 8/19/11.

SaVannah was born the week of St Patty's day 2011.  She is a very pretty sable with no flashy markings and a lipliner look around her nose.  According to the volunteer who handled her surrender and housed her for a few weeks, it took SaVannah about 3 days before she didn't freak out and run away if play attempts were made.  She started to become more interactive in about 24 hours but that required sitting in the middle of the floor and letting her initiate contact.  She still runs when she thinks she is being bad.  She hides when she doesn't want to go to her cage yet and will not come out.  (The tube is ideal for this)  She loved the volunteer's husband and rarely ran from him.  she also really liked the large dog in the household tried to cuddle and play with him all the time.  She is very gentle and sweet and has begun doing drive by tackles of the feet (no teeth).  The person surrendering SaVannah said she had a problem with her stealing the boys stuffed toys and trying to hide them.  Her distemper shot was done on 9/7/11.

Thelma (smaller, grayer, white knees) and Louise (larger, white mitts and bib) came to the shelter because their owner's son was having some anger issues and she was afraid he would hurt them.  Both are very active and playful.  Like typical young ferrets, they do sometime grab with their mouths, especially when they are excited.  In their old home they lived with a dog that they slept with and a cat which they played and slept with.  Their old owner had them up to date on rabies and distemper.  Louise will be due in Feb of 2012, while Thelma is good until January of 2012.  They were health checked by our vet on 9/7/11.  Thelma was born the week of 9/19/10, while Louise was born the week of 10/10/10.

Gracie and Panzer arrived when their military family was transferred and could not take them to their new base.  Gracie is a very sweet girl who is pretty good about the litter pan.  She likes water.  She has not shown any biting or nipping behavior.  She is not a Marshall's ferret.  Based on owner report and the condition of her teeth, she was probably born early to mid 2006.  Panzer is not very good with the litter pan, but is a very playful ferret who loves his sister.   He will sometimes do excited or bossy nipping .  According to owner report, he was purchased from a pet store about two years ago at the age of two months, however his teeth seem to indicate that older-perhaps as old as Gracie.  Panzer hates getting wet.  Both have been around dogs, cats and older children.  Vet check and distemper shots done on 4/21/11 (amc).

Kita,
her brother (at the bridge) and sister (adopted) came to the shelter as the result of a domestic abuse situation.  Kita was born on July 5, 2005.  She is a nipper.  She doesn't really like to be held, but will play with her person.  She really likes squeak toys.  She reportedly loves baths, "ferret raisin treats" and banana yogis.  Although she is a senior ferret she is still healthy and active.  She likes other ferrets and must not be considered as an "only".  She has been at the shelter for over a year now and has just been relisted for adoption (she was withdrawn to stay with her brother while he was ill with IBD).  Now that he has gone to the bridge she would make a nice addition to a home with other senior ferrets.   Most recent vet check and distemper shot done on 8/16/11 (LS).

Stevie II and Roxy are a very playful pair of ferrets.  They do great together, but when put with other ferrets Roxy gets overwhelmed and Stevie gets dominated by males.  They have not shown any signs of nipping or biting here at the shelter, but they do play hard.  Depending on their moods, they will sometimes snuggle with you.  One day Stevie is rambunctious, the next day it is Roxy.  Stevie does have some odd tissue where he was descented, both our vets looked at him and tried to express the glands, it was determined that there is nothing to express, it is likely scar tissue from the descenting.  Based on the condition of his their teeth, we believe they were likely born mid 2008 to early 2009.  Vet check and distemper shots done 8/11/11 (amc).  Stevie was sedated and his glands looked at on 8/12/11 (LS).  They are scheduled for dentals on 9/21/11 (LS).

Ari came from a home with two other ferrets (they remained in the home).  Ari was surrendered because he had issues with his owner's boyfriend and would pull stealth attacks and bite him.  Because of his history, he is available to experienced owners only.  At the FVF foster home he was somewhat skittish but after being worked with he has come a very long way.  Here at the shelter, we have noticed that he bites men but not women (except at his vet check, then he was an equal opportunity biter).  He has transitioned into one of our open rooms and is doing very well.  We believe that a quieter home with another ferret would be ideal for him.  Based on the condition of his teeth we believe he was born early spring in 2009.  Vet check and distemper shot done on 4/27/11 (amc).

November: No adoptions.

Rudy
is a very sweet boy who would be a good "first ferret".  He came in being feed a bad diet, his energy level and coat have improved on our shelter blend.  He likes to be around his "person" and was describe as "doglike" in his desire to be underfoot.  He was recently moved into our "less active" room and while he isn't interested in the other ferrets, he doesn't fight with them either.  Based on the condition of his teeth, he was likely born between summer of 2007 and early 2008.  We are currently watching one of his canines to make sure a dental isn't necessary.  Vet check and distemper done on 8/11/11 (amc).  Adoption pending

Crystal and Chocolate are beautiful sisters with very different personalities.  Crystal is rambunctious and likes to play nip toes.  She is very curious and into everything.  Chocolate is a cuddler who was described as "lazy".  She has reportedly never danced and really doesn't seem to play.  She is cage defensive and will nip at you when she is in her cage.  Outside of the cage she is much better, but will nip if she is upset by something (such as a ferret being adopted from the room she is in-she bite the shetler mom for about a week after that).  She has a big spleen which was ultrasounded (LS) because of its shape.  The ultrasound showed no reason for concern.  These ferrets have been with children as young as two and were fine with them, but we would not trust Chocolate with her issues..  They also lived with a large dog.  Based on the condition of their teeth Crystal was likely born between Spring and early Winter of 2009, Chocolate between Summer 2008 and Early 2009.  Vet check done on 8/24/11 (amc), the ultrasound was done the same day.  Crystal had her distemper shot at AMC, Chocolate had hers on 8/28/11 at FVF. .
